Young Australians living with parents: free and pay board as popular housing tenure choices

Abstract Young adults staying with parents is definitely a growing housing tenure in Australia. This paper, for the first time, unearths individual-level choices of young Australians from household-level data owning/renting 2017 Household Income and Labour Dynamics Australia survey. In addition to owner-occupation private rental, paper explores influence personal characteristics on two types multigenerational co-residence: who live rent-free pay board. The results show that, Australia, women are more independent their (i.e., owning renting) comparison men. There trend towards mature high-earning people living free, which might be explained by aim saving money buy house or investment property also care arrangements elderly parents. Marital status has significant effect choices. Never married prefer either free board; while those divorced/separated widowed rent privately maintain residential independency, after life circumstances changed. study informs policy makers provide support fully partly (renting paying board) assisting them climb up career ladder—becoming homeowner.
